ENGLISH

Arnhem, Sunday, September 17, 1944.
it is with great emotion on that day, that the local people of Arnhem are following the impressive deployment of the allied parachute sails above their city; never before freedom seemed so close. Unfortunately, operation ‘Market Garden’, boldly conducted by British and Polish troops failed. Surrounded by a stronger than expected German Wehrmacht, British troops were to surrender to the enemy after nine days of fierce resistance around the bridge at Arnhem, whose importance was so crucial to the advance of allied troops heading for Berlin. Meanwhile, caught in crossfire, the civilian population received order to evacuate the city as fast as possible. From that moment on, for the more than 90,000 inhabitants of the municipality of Arnhem and surroundings, a long and dangerous journey on foot to an unknown destination begins.
Within three days, the city of Arnhem turns into a ghost town, left to looters and wandering dogs.
Escorted by the Red Cross, Jan, Henny, Riet, Karel and the beadle of the main church of the city and his children are part of this long procession leaving behind a ghost town. Only Ton, a zookeeper remains as he joins the volunteer corps from the St. Elizabeth Hospital where he helps by attending the many wounded and the local resistance.
While staged scenes evoke the scale of the evacuation, each of these formal refugees reflect on their stories completed by photos, personal notes and home movies of the circumstances in which their lives were changed forever.
In featuring the stories of these refugees during their fled to a temporary shelter until their return a year later, in a devastated city, the film ‘In the shadow of the bridge’, recalling on events taking place in the years of 1944-1945, remains a human document of a still current actuality.

FRANCAIS

Dimanche 17 septembre 1944.
